“Chaturanga,” which translates to “Quartet” in English, is a novel by Rabindranath Tagore, the renowned poet, novelist, and Nobel laureate in Literature. Originally written in Bengali, “Chaturanga” was first published in 1916 and is considered one of Tagore’s significant works of fiction.

The novel revolves around the central character, Sachish, a young man torn between conflicting desires and ideologies. Set against the backdrop of Bengal during the early 20th century, “Chaturanga” explores themes of love, spirituality, social reform, and political upheaval.

Sachish finds himself entangled in a complex web of relationships with three women: Damini, the wife of his friend; Kumudini, a young widow; and Kamal, a revolutionary. Each woman represents different facets of Sachish’s personality and his conflicting desires for love, duty, and personal fulfillment.
