“Chorai Dhon,” which translates to “The Stolen Durwan” in English, is a short story by Rabindranath Tagore, the acclaimed poet, novelist, and Nobel laureate in Literature. Originally written in Bengali, “Chorai Dhon” is one of Tagore’s many short stories that showcase his mastery of storytelling and exploration of human emotions and societal issues.

The story revolves around the character of Dhona, a poor but honest gatekeeper (durwan) who works at a wealthy landlord’s mansion. Dhona’s dedication to his duty and his unwavering honesty earn him the respect and trust of the landlord and his family.

However, Dhona’s life takes a tragic turn when he is falsely accused of stealing a precious item from the mansion. Despite his protests of innocence, Dhona is dismissed from his job and ostracized by society. The injustice of his situation weighs heavily on Dhona, who struggles to rebuild his life and reputation.
